What do I teach?
I teach all styles of guitar — rock, jazz, classical, and improvisation — as well as bass guitar and mandolin. My lessons cover instrumental technique, music-reading, performance skills, arranging, repertoire, history, theory, and interpretation. I offer proven approaches to memorization, relaxation, posture, tone production, and preparation for auditions.
Students will learn fundamental skills to improve their musicianship. Each student will become a performer and interpreter of his or her chosen repertoire and style. My approach to teaching guides students toward the goal of guitar mastery, and my curiosity about developments in the field informs me about what other players are doing and keeps my teaching fresh.
Why do I teach?
- I teach because I love to teach.
- I teach because I love to share what I have learned.
How do I teach?
- I create individualized curricula and tailor practice schedules to each student’s needs, learning style, and ability.
- I avoid negativity and provide positive support during lessons and am available to students for online clarification and follow-up
- I share with my students what I’m learning as I perform and teach; the student’s journey is a shared journey.
- I encourage conversation about the student’s goals and musical taste, and shape the lesson plan to optimize achieving those goals in the context of that repertoire.
- My students have progressed from beginners to earning doctorates in guitar performance and establishing independent professional careers as performers.
- I have successfully prepared students for auditions, recitals, competitions, and performances.
- I have been an invited lecturer at major conservatories in the US and the UK.
- I have conveyed a genuine love of music and music-making to hundreds of students at all levels of learning.
